Lacy Update

Here is the
Princess  Milkmaid
who really deserves a better name.

Élodie

It means
'meadow flower'!

I added lace around the edge
of her shoulder plate
just to look pretty.

As it will be inside her gown
no one will see it
but I'll know it's there.

The lace on her arms
will emerge from the narrow sleeves
of her gown.
They have a fancy name.

After much digging around
in my cloth stash for some fancy fabric
for the front panel of the petticoat,
I gave up and went to the experts.

 suggested one of his paintings.

This is Spring from his series

Perfect!

The colour was a little bright
for my shy royal milkmaid.
so I muted it to
pastel greys and greens and blues
and printed it out.

And  now it's all ready
to be part of her second petticoat.

  1. Lovely name and the fabric printing is very cool. Would never have thought of that :D She's looking great!

    1. Thank you, SUmmer! I've always liked the name, but never had a face to put it to. The skirt panel inspiration came from hours (literally) digging about through scraps of fabric and realising I didn't have anything that looked right and wishing I could just print my own... And then a lightbulb moment, you know? :)

    2. Oops, and I can spell, honest. I just can't type.

    1. Thank you, Karin. I love reading other dollmaker's works-in-progress and it helps me, sometimes, to chart what I've done.

    1. heh! Thank you. I'd printed on fabric before and it was like...why not for a doll? It might be a neat idea but it's taken me years to put the two techniques together! :)

  4. Oh, what a lovely idea for printing out the portrait onto fabric. Your milkmaid is charming! Wow...I can imagine the hours you have put into creating her. She is one of your most creative dolls with such wondrous clothing. She is a beauty and I love her hair!
I went 'all out' for Anita's French Blog Party, and it was an education in itself for me when I did research on artists, and famous places in France.
I am going to be using your Miss Rabbit and Alice doll in photos when I participate in Vanessa Valencia's 'Mad Tea Party' in July. Can't wait!

    1. Thank you, Teresa. Elodie has proved to be very exciting to make and I learned so much. I love it when a doll teaches me something new. Your Miss R White was my first cloth doll with a painted body, and it's taken me a year to see I could use the same technique on human dolls.

Oh, Miss Rabbit and Alice are going to the Mad Tea Party? Omigosh! How wonderful! I'm thrilled and flattered. Thank you! She'll be happy, too. She missed it last year. The County fair had lost her!

  5. Oh my goodness...she is utterly perfect!!! AH, I wish I could swing it, but I am actually trying to simplify these days, but she is A KNOCK-OUT! Rhissanna, you are magic!

And thank you so much for your kind words about my post. Since I took those photos, my flowers in the window boxes are finally puffing up for we have had cool weather but lots of rain. SEE THE BUNNY!!!!!!! tehehehehee...that's "Carlos" the bunny. DO NOT ask me how I came to name him that, but he is our resident rabbit and peeks into my French doors!

I hope to get even nicer pictures to submit to a few magazines with an article. I want to publish! I had fun with this one by trying to make it a fairytale, which frankly, in spite of the average difficulties that come with life, living here at Rabbit Hill IS like a fairytale!

    Have a great day, Anita

    1. Carlos is a sweetheart!

Ohh! Publishing! Do keep us informed. Yes, the whole cottage looks like a fairy tale; Cinderella because it's transformed into something wonderful by love. It's inspiring, especially to those who look at our boring houses and wish for something better. We need to get up from our keyboards and make it happen!

As for Elodie, I owe you a lot for the inspiration, Anita. Without your work and imagination, she wouldn't have happened. So, thank you.

  6. Oh what a great idea to photo copy for her petticoat, I can't wait to see it. I love her wild hair and oh, a hint of lace here and there

    1. Thank you, Carol. I'm going to have to tame that wild hair a little, which is a shame. When she'd done I want to make another doll with that white hair, just so it can hang free!

  7. She's coming along beautifully. I love the idea of printing on the fabric, it looks gorgeous especially in the slightly muted colours.

    1. Thank you so much! Yes, the original colours are lovely but they quite overwhelmed the doll. Faded out, it looks a little shabby chic and I'm ok with that.

    1. Oh! That's very sweet of you, Simon. She's been fun and I hope to get her finished at the end of this week. With 18th century costumes, the problem is knowing when to stop!
